601-801 PTO shaft interchange

Its not a SOS. I thought the 4 and 5 speeds use the same shafts. Both built after 57. Would you use the shaft in the pic? What do you think would cause that, bad bushing?

As long as not SOS or NAA it should work. The only way I would use that shaft is if I were running the same fluid in both compartments, Hyd/rear. Not sure why the shaft you have is ate up. You can check to see if you have wear in the pto support bearing or the pto shaft rear bearing. It's also possible that the pto shaft might be bent.

The pic is of one my father had. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what that center part rides in. I think i'll measure the position out tomorrow. If it rides in the pto shifter then I can deal with that.

The section of your pto shaft that is ate up is were the oil seal is on the shaft. The oil seal separates the hydraulic fluid from the fluid in the rear. It's likely that your oil seal came apart. It might have cause the damage to your pto shaft although I have never seen one damaged that bad from an oil seal. If you do a lot of brushogging you might want to check the shaft to see that it is not bent.
Most of the times when the oil seal wears and leaks the fluids will mix. A lot of guys will just run the same fluid between the Hyd and rear rather than change the seal.
