861 PS question

Hi,

rebuilt PS on my 861; new steering column from here, bearings, seals etc. New pump new cylinders. Works well but I get an upwelling of PS fluid out under the steering wheel if its cold or if I run it all the way lock to lock. I am thinking PS pressure is just a little too high and its blowing past the top seal.

Any thoughts?

It shouldnt leak there at all, did you feel the seal slip past the outside edge? I always give a little back and forth motion while pushing the tube on. Was it good before it started leaking the first time? If it was good before, the pump shouldnt be the problem.
 
It was never 'good" as it was trashed when I got it with a seized pump are rusted through cylinders, pitted steering column. New springs and seals and bearings in the control valve, new pump, new tubing, new cylinders. Generally it leake when steering and not when the sterring wheel is not being turned.

Yes I felt the edge slide over easy. My only worry is I left too much travel up and down by not tightenign the nut enough.
 
What did the surface of the seal area on the shaft look like?
Did you put a speedi sleeve on it?
My first guess is that it might need a sleeve there.

There are specific instructions in the service manual for tightening that nut. I don't have the book handy, but from memory I believe that You are supposed to tighten it until snug/tight and then back off a certain fraction (1/6 or 1/4???) of a turn and then stake the nut in place.
 
Thats about how much they are supposed to move. When you turn the wheel one way the shaft and control valve spool moves up, turn the other way the shaft and spool moves down. Thats what redirects pressure for left or right turns.
