I'm trying to get an old Ford 4000 diesel back running that belonged to my father n law, he passed 2 months ago. I can't read the serial #, looks like it might have been repainted over. If I removed the paint would the # be visible? By the looks of the tractor I guessing it's a 62-64 model, blue motor and frame with white fenders and hood. I tried cranking it the otherday it will turn over but won't start, not sure how long it has sat. It has a key on the left and a push button right above it. Does the start switch on top of the trans have to be pushed in along with the button above the key to get it to start? Not familiar with the old Fords but have always loved them so trying to learn.

Ford made two entirely different 4000 model tractors.

To provide useful advise, we will need to know which model you have.

How many cylinders does the engine in your 4000 have?

Sounds like the transmission switch was bypassed. If the engine cranks but no white smoke, either much too slow or no fuel. If white smoke but
battery gives up too slow and or weak battery. If the 4 cyl (and it sounds like it; with the transmission switch) you got intake heaters. Check
to see if they are working. Freshly charged battery, intake heaters should get you going. Real synthetic oil will allow it to spin faster in the
cold.

Serial # of the 1966 Ford 3500 Industrial tractor I owned a while back. It was a 3cyl. diesel. Maybe similar to yours

Push button above the key switch will be the glow plugs or intake heaters. If they work you should turn the key on and hold that button for half a minute or so before cranking.

The throttle lever is also the engine shut down.
When the lever is all the way forward it shuts off the fuel in the pump.
If you don't have the throttle lever pulled back from 1/4 to 1/3 throttle it won't start.

Like said the button above the key is for the glow plugs.
Turn the key on then push and hold the glow plug button for 20-25 seconds, then push the starter button on the trans to crank the engine.

It's possible that setting 2 years it's leaked the fuel out and now has air in the pump.

Make sure that gearsshift interlock works, its not hard to forget what you are doing sometimes. It will run over someone (including you) quick if it fires up in gear.
