801 Ford rear fenders

Has anyone taken apart the factory fenders that came on these tractors? I want to strip the paint off a set but if there is paint behind the panel i dont want to remove it that way. I may have to just sand them very good.

The fender is spot welded to the fender bracket so there is no paint between the parts.

If your fender is bolted to the bracket, someone other than Ford has done so because the OEM spot welds have failed due to corrosion of the fender at the weld points. Not uncommon.

Dean gave you great advice.

Pixs shows how rust can form between bracket and fender. The only way to stop the rust is to separate the fender/bracket by drilling out the spot welds. Depending on rust severity, electrolysis or phosphoric acid would be the right solution.

Reattach by plug welding or nuts/bolts. Plug welding would be stronger and provide an original appearance.

Depending on how you plan to reattach the fender/bracket, use either a weld through primer or thoroughly seal the area to prevent water intrusion.

What is the tractor in the photo? I've never seen a fender mounted that low on the bracket.

(quoted from post at 10:07:48 12/30/17) That's my 1963 row crop 4000. The bull gears add more than a foot in height. The older I get, the harder it is to mount.
Thanks for the explanation! :)
