Ford 8000 transmission

I'm trying to mate the transmission back up to the rear end and won't mate up. This is my first time to try this. I have taken the hydraulic pump out to gain access
from the side panel. The problem seems to be in the PTO clutch pack due to it being spring loaded. Everytime I try to bring the 2 parts together the PTO shaft binds up
and quits turning and I back off. I'm not sure if I should force them together with the bolts or if I have done something wrong. Any advise out there?

DO NOT FORCE! You will live to regret it. Done properly, the two parts should slip together with no more force required than a big pair of channel locks.

Why is the PTO clutch "spring loaded"? It should not be. The entire PTO assembly, including the drive hub, should be inside the rear axle before you attempt to join the pieces together. Also, check the female splines carefully on the drive hub to make sure they aren't burred.

I'm not sure how to explain it. The service manual makes it sound so easy, but it isn't. I wish I could talk with someone on the phone.

We figured it out. There is a PTO clutch alignment pin that I didn't read about till now. I never removed the pin before I split the tranny and it was in the way putting it back together. Problem solved so far. Hope everything works when I finally get it back together. Thanks for your reply
