water in 4000 4 cyl Power steering tank

Does anyone have any idea why you get a lot of water condensation on lid of power steering tank? I think it has something to do with that felt washer just under the steering wheel.

It's the weather. The vapor will work it way through to the highest point. It could also be a seal going bad. The shaft seal may be allowing air to be drawn in, even though it holds the oil in. Is it standard or row crop version?

I was going to ask this same question. My Industrial 4000 does the same thing. Last summer I had siphoned as much of the power steering fluid as I could and replaced it with new. The other day I went to move the machine and the steering wheel wouldn't move as the temperature was well below freezing.
This machine sits outside and uncovered.

You didn't get all, or even most of the water out.

The water will collect in the lower parts of the system, e.g., the cylinders.

The best solution is to thoroughly flush the old oil by jacking up the front axle, removing the hoses at the cylinders and manually moving the steering system lock to lock several times to flush out the old oil. I do this more than once and always do so in the summer.

Once thoroughly flushed, change the filter, and refill with the correct oil. I use CNH Ambra. Then replace the oil once every two years or so.

A helpful hint is to add some gas line anti-freeze (dry gas) to the system before flushing. They operate the system long enough that everything gets up to operating temperature. The alcohol will help to cause the water to "mix" with the oil so that most of it will drain out when you flush the system. I do this when changing oil in PS systems as well as hydraulic systems, transmissions (not hydrostats) and rear axles. Sometimes I do so in engines when such engines are rarely operated.

Thanks for the detailed advice Dean. I will save this and use it for one of my first projects this Spring.

I think a big part of the problem is the poor venting in the lid as the hot water vapor goes to the top of the lid and cant pass. I have a spare lid that someone welded about a 5" long 1/2" pipe to it. I think i'll drill a hole in the pipe cap and install a vent to see if that will change things. I will post back later on results. I think the felt washer under the steer wheel keeps condensation from getting down to the top shaft seal and rusting the shaft. I need a bigger barn. No, I need to make some money.
