4000 transmission

Got a 1967 4000 with 8 speed tranny. A few of the
gears whine while in use. I am running 303 hydro
fluid but have seen some use 80w90 gear oil. Not
sure what the whine is or if the gear oil will help.
Any suggestions. Thanks and Merry Christmas

Most 303 is not spec'd for your machine. In the state of Missouri, good sources tell me 303 is even banned.

Is your 303 spec'd for your application? While I'm not sure, I doubt that it is. Pay attention to what spec your tractor requires and find something that "meets or exceeds" it.

The recommended oil is 134 spec which is hyd oil.
The older hundred series used 80-90W gear oil in the trans and rear axle with 134 in the hydraulics, I've never used 80-90 in a thousand series.

If it has much of a whine you probably have a bearing going bad.
