starters on 901

I was going to take my starter in to Napa to have it checked. They don't have a number so they can hook it up to the machine plus their books say it a 6 volt. Is it a 6 volt just using 12 volt or is it really a 12 volt and how do you tell the difference?

If it's a gas engine, it's a 6V starter, unless someone swapped in a 12V. If it's a diesel engine, it's a 12V starter.

it's a gas that runs on an 12 volt alternator and battery. But that doesn't mean the starter was changed to 12 does it? wouldn't a 6 volt on 12 turn her over as long as you don't do it for long and burn her up? Does the diesel bolt up the same so it's interchangeable with the gas? Are the starters stamped in some way?

"But that doesn't mean the starter was changed to 12 does it?"

No, it doesn't. The 6V starters will work on 12V.
Which means they could also be tested on 12V.
You might want to try a different parts store.
Or test it yourself with a battery and jumper cables.

Take your starter out. hook up your jumper cables. red to the place where your positive wire was hooked to. hook the ground up to the case. hook up the one to your case to the negative side of battery post. touch the other one to the positive post. starter should spin. it doesn't care if its 6 or 12 volt it should spin. if it doesent unhook one battery cable. take the band off on the end. under there you will see brushes. reach in and turn the shaft some. try it again. if it trys to spin and you see a lot of sparks then you need new brushes. if it doesn't do anything you may need a new starter. starters usually don't go bad unless some one has cranked the heck out of it. brushes do wear out. hopefully this will help but don't go back to the same place you asked to check it until they hire some one with some common sense in parts/etc.

Some are stamped but probably only after it has been remanufactured. If it is a 6-V it will have only 2 field windings. If it is a tractor diesel starter it will have 4 field windings. If it is a 12-v automotive starter that has been installed on your gas burner tractor it will have 3 field windings. If it is on your 12-v tractor any one of the 3 starters just mentioned will work fine. I have used 6-v and 12-v starters on diesel tractors with very good results. I have even used 6-v starters on the 6000 diesel engine that I put in my car with good success.

If you look at CNH partstore it shows 2 fields for 6 volt and 4 fields for 12 volt. You can tell by the number of square socket pole screws on the outside. I have a 641 that when you fire it up you can hear the starter spinning a few seconds after it starts.
