just a quick question are the 3 cylinder diesel engines the same on a 3000 and a 4000 and also if different will a 4000 engine fit a 3000 bell housing?

External dimensions and bellhousing pattern are the same - they can swap. The bores and strokes are both different. a 3-cylinder
4000 has a 201 c.i. - 4.4" bore, 4.4" stroke. The 3000 has a 175 c.i. - 4.2" x 4.2"
Just be aware that you'll be putting almost 25% more power through that rear end than it was intended to handle. Used within
reason, it will be OK.

The engines have different cubic inches, both bore and stroke.
3000 engine is 175 ci, 4.2 bore, 4.2 stroke, 41 pto hp
4000 engine is 201 ci, 4.4 bore, 4.4 stroke, 52 pto hp
The 4000 engine will bolt right on to a 3000 chassis.
Ford built a 4110LGC model using the 4000 engine on a 3000 chassis, many highway departments used them to mow road sides.

Easiest way to tell for sure what engine it has is to look at the engine serial number which is stamped into a flat rail on the block just above the oil pan on the right side toward the front of the engine. The engine serial number will start with a "N" or a "C" if it is a 3000 engine or a "P" or "D" if it is a 4000 engine.

They switched from "N" to "C" and from "P" to "D" on 4/1/68, which is also when they changed the 4000 gasoline engine from a 192 ci to a 201 ci, so the letter will also help you figure out the size of the engine if it is a 4000 gasser.

The clutch and flywheel on these always
stay with the transmission. So no, they
didnt put the wrong clutch in it.
I had a 3000 pressure plate rebuilt a few
years ago and he didn't have the right
springs in stock so he put heavier
springs in it.
It was way too hard to push the pedal down
so I complained. He said bring it back and
he would fix it which he did.
He told me the problem and apologized -
after I had to split the tractor again.
Needless to say I haven't brought him any
more work.
