Help my neighbor get this 841 running today. He recently acquired it thru an elderly ladies Farm. she is a widow and remembers her late husband driving it around in reverse only. We got it running today and shore enuf it only has reverse. It won't even go into any forward gears..also the clutch is not disengaging so probably the clutch plate disc are rusted badly together. gunna be quite a project. On the serial number stamping there is a D-S following the 841. Anybody know what that stands for?

The D means that it has a diesel engine. The S means that it has a Sherman auxiliary transmission. The Sherman could be a step-up-step-down combo or it could be a reverser. If it was bought new with the loader and backhoe, then chances are it is the reverser.

Thanks Sean for the info

We did shift the aux handle today and it seemed like it was just a high and low range. How would a guy know if it was a reverser?

Also could that aux. handle keep the tranny from shifting into the forward gears? It's all gonna come apart soon since the clutch is rusted shut

Thanks for any info

If shifting the aux trans without touching hte main shifter just changes speed then it is not a reverser. The reversing aux trans reverses the input to the main transmission so that in one position you have 4 forward and one reverse gear by switching gears on the main shifter and in the other position you have 4 reverse and one forward gear.

The high and low ranges that you found should be over and under drive ranges. Try moving the handle to the mid point between the two and then slide the handle in sideways toward the center line of the tractor. If it moves in that direction then it is a combo, and I believe that the "stock" range is obtained by moving the handle in and then forward, but it might be rearward.

My neighbor power washed this beast last nite and discovered an inspection plate to the clutch area. He is kinda busy so not much progress has been had. several hydraulic lines are rusted thru he's got quite a job ahead of him. I should be working on it for him cuz I have more time than he does

It's a Sherman combo. It will give you 12 forward, 3 reverse,3 PTO
speeds. For operation go to YouTube and click on my name Kirk-NJ.

Hot wired the starter with it in reverse to back in onto the trailer

Yesterday we pulled the trans. shifter cover off to see what kinda damage was in the tranny. All we could see wrong was the top cross shaft rod was rusted where it slides under the ball and detent spring. A little pb blaster in the right spot and a small crescent wrench on the shaft freed it up. There was a lotta water in the gearbox floating on the gear oil so I suspect he may have some bad bearings to deal with once he get the hydraulic lines fixed. Anyway it shifts now into all the gears.

Oil floats on water, not the other way around.

***UPDATE*** Back Sept. my neighbor bought this 841 from an elderly widow lady about 20 miles away. It is a beast with the loader and the backhoe. We had it running for a bit but the clutch is stuck so we pulled it outta the woods into a field and and then backed it onto his trailer by bumping the starter in reverse...worked quite well to get it loaded. We got it to his place ok. It has blown hydraulic lines for the loader and the backhoe so as of yesterday it's still sitting on the trailer. He has been replacing hydraulic lines as needed. He said Monday he will get the last hose replaced ad finally get it off the trailer. Then he gets to deal with the stuck clutch.

I'll bet that the water that you see on top of the oil is fresh from the pressure washing. It would take awhile for it to settle down through the gear oil if that is what is in there. There is still a strong likelihood of water under the oil but perhaps not much. Water sitting in an 841 transmission is however, likely to rust a tube that carries hydraulic oil through from the engine mounted pump. If it gets a hole, hydraulic oil is pumped from the hydraulic chamber into the transmission.
