I went and got the 641 the fil gave us. Now that I've had a
chance to evaluate it i have a few questions. the whole
electrical is gone drained a large quantity of water out of the
trans pulled the plug in the rear end got nothing. The main
transmission housing is cracked badly and the rad has a hole in
it. So before I go any further in my plans do the trans and read
end oil run together? Also what do I do with the trans? I'm
thinking a replacement must by found. What tractors use this
transmission? There a couple transaxles at the scrap yard that
look right but with only rear end and trans is there a way to
tell if I way getting the right one? Also if I happen to find a
five speed will it bolt in? Thanks I'm sure I will have lots
more questions as this goes. P.s. as I said in a previous post
the wife's grandma bought this new. She farmed quite a bit of
ground back then. I have the chance to save it for the next
generation so I'm going to fix it weather its worth it or not.

Transmission and rear end oil are separate. You likely need to poke a hole through the mud in the bottom of the rear end for it to drain. The center housing between them holds the hydraulic oil, thus there are three oil reservoirs besides the engine. If you have power steering it also has its own reservoir.

The later 01 series had fine spline tail shafts. Depending on which spline you have, any transmission out of an 00, 01 or early 000 series will bolt in. If you put something other than a 4 speed back in you will have to change the clutch and flywheel accordingly.

For the easiest switch you may want to consider the same series as you have 601 or 801 series. Here are a couple of things to remember. Before serial 14256 will be rough input shaft spline 10. Later than that will be a fine spline 15 shaft. Easy change no big deal. The fine spline coming out of the rear of the trans drive line was made somewhere around serial number 58,000. If you look at the photo of my 640 you will notice the the brake system is different then your 641. The left brake runs thru the front of the trans where on yours it's under the rear center housing. Also the plate between the engine and flywheel were different thickness so you might need the proper one to fit the right trans.
Best to find out what serial number you have and go from there. If buying from a scrap yard you will surely want to open up the top cover and check the gear teeth and if there is a lot of rust then it's possible some of the bearings might be shot. Pay accordingly and if the case is good you can always switch your gears into it, Just more work.
