i am interested to find out the good or bad on a 1994 ford , new holland 7740 fwa tractor , looking at one . has 4000 hrs. mint condition.

Hi Rustred

I have a 7840 2wd with cab it is a SL model. It replaced a Ford 7700. It is a much better tractor being a newer model. The cab is very comfortable controls are well placed. Servicing is simple and easy. Only draw back is the 12 x12 transmission which is not sequential in ground speed like the 7700 and does not have dual power, however the synchro and forward reverse feature is great. You have not told us which range your tractor is. Mine had been cared for by a fastidious owner which makes it a very good machine. All the usual stuff will apply if you say it is mint condition then should be good. One thing these tractors do is heat the paint off the top of the bonnet with the exhaust aspiration air filter system. They are very good tractors as Ford was really getting it right from improvements from the 1000 series tractors on. Got a 5000 as well which is an awesome old machine.

We have a Ford/New Holland 6640 SLE, (1996 year model) 16 speed with a cab, 2wd. Bought it used around 17 years ago (used to be a city of San Antonio tractor that mowed row) only paid 13k for it in surprisingly real good shape with new rear tires. Only real problem we had with it is was a slightly bent steering cylinder rod (bought it that way) got a new cylinder rod, and re-pack the steering cylinder. Has never given us any troubles, starts right up in the winter time, very happy with it.

You need to supply more info. on transmission and hydraulics. SLE has a very expensive hydraulic pump. I had to replace the pump on my 8240. It cost $5300 just for the parts. The transmission can be expensive to work on also. There was a major change during the 40 series production. If it has a 16 speed look on the right side of the trans where the filters are. If there are five solenoids there you are good if not they are inside and it is a much bigger job to replace them.

Yes, that would be the SL model. Same hydraulics, more or less, as the 10 series. The pumps are updated a bit but the same system function. The 12 speed is decent... Have to be careful of the shift linkage or sometimes they lock in gear. Other than that, pretty solid tractor. The hours may or may not be accurate as the instruments were known to die around that hour range... so it might have a new cluster. Might be original and doesn't work... or might be accurate.

The sl, I believe is the better tractor. Others might argue, but less electronics in the tranny. I have a 6640 sl and love it.

Do not shift the shuttle when rolling.

I tried a 7740SL, nice cab, 12 spd trans didn't have the gear spacing I liked for baling hay but one with dual power would help.
Personally I just don't want to deal with the electronics on a SLE model.

I'd like to have a 7840SL with dual power, but the 8x4 dual power trans on the older series is hard to beat.

Although the cab isn't as roomy I've always wanted a 7710 Series II with dual power.
