5000 D temp showing high!

My 74 5000D is showing a high temp. I checked the top radiator hose and it is almost hot, the lower hose is a lot cooler (outside air temp 40F).
I'm thinking it is the gage or the temp sensor as the fuel gage is not correct. What should be the temp with a thermometer ? Also what is the
correct color for this tractor. I matched the cap on the can at TSC and it seems a darker blue. As always any help would be appreciated.
Thanks ed1

If your fuel gauge reads high, you have a sticking (malfunctioning) voltage stabilizer on the back of the dash. About the size of a circuit breaker, it has two terminals on it - you can't miss it.

Part #8 at the link below.
Voltage stabilizer

On the sender, I'd say very possible. I had the same situation with my 3600. I plumbed a mechanical gauge into it and proved that It was not running hot. After a time I replaced the sender and now the gauge on the dash reads fine.

An infrared heat gun would be the cat's meow here. I understand (I got a good Milwaukee) that Harbor Freight sells a decent non name brand pretty cheap.

Ok thanks guys got a infrared temp sensor and temps are good! Thanks for your help.
