641 workmaster

When doing a 6v to 12v conversion, is it necessary to remove the top cover to the tractor? If so, what needs to be disconnected?

The hood,(top cover0 doesn't need to be off, but it is sure a lot easier to work on with the whole air cleaner out of the way. Two bolts and a hose clamp!

What is this called? Do I need to leave it in place?

What is this? Does this need to remain?

Your first picture is the starter relay (solenoid). You need one and can continue to use that one if you wish.

Your second picture is the voltage regulator. Hopefully your 12 volt conversion is being done with an alternator that has an internal voltage regulator, and if that is the case, then you will no longer use that old voltage regulator. If your conversion requires an external regulator you will need to replace that one with a 12 volt regulator, but I doubt that is the case.

Did you buy a conversion kit? If so it should have instructions.

Do you have a I&T manual for the tractor, or a shop manual? It will make all these things immensely easier if we are all speaking the same language, and you will very quickly develop understanding of these different components.

I would volunteer that the parts you showed seem shiny new. That suggests to me that someone just worked on the the starting circuit and the charging circuit. The ignition circuit less clearly new. If thats the case, it also suggest someone - maybe the previous owner- was trying to fix somthing that wanst working. Before making any changes, its an excellent idea to get what you have working.

Yeah, I got the ?kit? from Steiner.

The Starter Relay solenoid is listed as 6v. Does this need to changed out to a 12v?

When I changed my 641 over to 12 volts, I never had the hood off Kind of tight reaching in behind the dash to make a few changes but I could reach it all with the top of the hood simply opened.
