4000SU Diesel Generator Problem

Had problem charging. Had generator checked at shop...was good. Replaced regulator. I thought it was fine. Battery seemed to be charging. Nothing felt like it was getting hot. About 3 months later
noticed the the wire on the back of the generator had got hot enough to burn off the insulation around the connector. Upon further searching found that the regulator had got so hot that the plastic housing
was melted and the wiring connect to the regulator had got hot enough to melt a small amount. Any clues what happen/what is wrong??? Shop said the generator is fried. Looks like it needs new generator,
regulator and wiring harness now. Thanks.
 
I would say that a loose/open armature connection is what fried your generator. Because of the natural residual magnetism of a generator field, it is always putting out something when it turns, and if there's nowhere for the power to go, the generator literally burns itself up.
 
Would the open or loose connection be in the generator or in the regulator? This problem happen when the regulator was replaced.

loose connection is a resistive connection that makes heat and heat melts insulation. Where insulation was melted, there was heat.
 
It could have happened on the "A" side of the regulator and still fried the generator. That said, I don't see how that would have fried the internals of the regulator.
 
I have read that must short two terminals on the regulator prior to the first use to get the polarity correct. Is this true?
 
Generators are supposed to be "polarized" after installation. This involves using a jumper wire and flashing the "F" terminal on the generator to battery positive for a moment. This can also be done at the regulator, but it's easier to do at the generator.
