1964 Ford 4000 (801) Won't Go In First Gear

Just picked up a Ford 4000, gas, 4 cyl, 4 sp, mechanically a 801 I'm told. Tractor will not go into first gear. Doesn't grind, slips into the slot for first (I believe), let out on the clutch, nothing. I'm waiting on my manuals to arrive, but in the interim, has anyone had this happen? Can it be fixed just through the top of trams or does it need to be split? How hard is it to split these?

I'll get some pics and video when I get out there once the sun comes up.

They arent too bad to split, concrete helps. I but a grader blade on my rearend and prop it up against the drawbar so it will stay up. My blade almost perfectly balances it. If you have to tear into the tranny I think you have to remove the whole assembly, not sure about that. It could be a bad shifter stick. If you remove the top cover you can manually shift the gears, you just have to know what action shifts first gear. You can mark which lever shifts what gears to keep on track. You may have to jack up one rear wheel to spin the gears so they will couple. Dont have a helper who is not worried about your fingers being in there, it may take a pry bar to shift them but dont force anything. Good lighting helps, take your time and dont do one action without undoing it before you forget what you did. If you lock it into 2 gears it wont budge. if you get it into first gear it should stop the wheel from turning. I would be careful about hitting the starting button if you try that. Someone else on here might chime in. You can also type in the search bar for 801,841,861 4 speed shifting problems, after the page resets, click search again, it will pull up old posts on the subject.

On the 4 speeds I have worked on 8N's and 600's the 1st gear shift fork can be replaced with out a split buts that's all you can replace internal to the trans from the top. You need to remove the shift cover for a look its all a guess till you can look into the trans. Worn shift leavers, forks all have other issues other than not going into one gear. To me not going into one gear only sum'N is broke :(
