Putting my 172 diesel back together. I was getting ready to time the injector pump and cannot see any marks on the fly
wheel. The head is off so I can see TDC in #1. Are the marks on the ring gear or on the fly wheel(just barely visible
inside of the ring gear)? Could a PO installed a new ring gear backwards?

They are on the flywheel not the ring gear. pretty light marks, soapstone makes them easier to see. Also easier to see at night with a light.

There's more to it than just having #1 piston at TDC. It has to be near TDC on the compression stroke. If it's on the exhaust stroke you'll be 180* out.

As has been said, timing marks are on the flywheel.
