Starts in gear

Guys,
Have a 62 Ford 4000,5 speed. tractor starts in gear. Pulled the trans cover and everything seems to be in place. The starter switch starts the tractor before the plunger on the switch makes contact with the gear interlocking plate. Bad switch?? or is there an adjustment that can be made.

Not that I know of. TSC stocks the switches. Sitting here thinking of the failure mechanism of the switch that would cause your problem rather than just the opposite and I am at a loss. Before you do anything else, disconnect the wire to it and see if the tractor starts. If so, shorted wire somewhere between the switch and the starting solenoid, or internal problem in solenoid would be my guess.

Original, non-altered 6V starting system?

If so, the wire between the starting switch and the solenoid is grounding to the chassis somewhere or the switch has failed.

I think I found the problem, there is something missing on the trans side. The plate that the switch plunger goes into is missing. Will try and post a pic later today.Either it fell off or was removed by previous owner or owners. Will look around bottom of trans to see if anything is there.
