8000 Pto Quit?s

1970 8000 pto quit pulling a gain auger. When I got to the tractor, there was a terrible squealing noise coming from (it sounded like) the clutch area. I sounds like a bearing going out. The tractor will pull just fine and the dual power and lift all work as they should. I know there is a pto hub in the flywheel. Do you think this may have stripped out or maybe the pto input shaft? I'm gonna split it at the clutch first unless someone on here (BERN!) says other wise. Thanks

If the PTO suddenly quit and you heard an awful squealing noise from the clutch area, this would indicate stripped hub splines as you stated. However, if the dual power and 3-point lift work fine, then most people would have at least an initial tendency to say that they are OK.

It's likely that there is just enough spline "grab" to turn the hydraulic pump sufficiently to engage the dual power. The true test of the splines would be to load the main hydraulic system, because I suspect all you did was raise an empty 3-point, which takes virtually no pressure. To test, pull back a remote lever handle with nothing in the couplers. It should "grunt" the engine. If it does not, and you hear the squeal again, I think you found your culprit.

Bad news is that you're not likely going to find stripped hub splines and good shaft splines. I fear you'll be doing a double split. Knowing this, myself personally I'd split it behind the trans first, and then remove the trans from the engine. I have found that to be easier for me.
