800 steering???

Hey Ford guys--I bought a 800/860 Ford a couple of years ago and it always steered hard no matter how much I greased the fitting at the end of the steering shaft. My son was using it to push the bean heads in the shed and it quit working all together one way. The shaft screws itself out one way. By the pictures can anyone tell what I am missing? To me there should be some kind of thrust bearing or washer. And where do I get parts for a 800 Ford? THANKS---Tee

Here's a link to the parts drawing for that steering gear:

Ford 860 manual steering gear

You should get yourself a service manual. Not much you can do pulling parts out the top. That stuff you pulled out is just the bearing for the upper part of the steering shaft and the dust seal and spring. There are a couple more bearings the lower part of the steering column, inside the gear box. You need to remove the sheet metal and open up the gearbox.

Bad thrust bearing on the upper side of the ball nut and worm shaft. You will need to remove both left and right sectors after the pittman arms have been removed so you can get all the old broken and damaged bearing parts out. Nasty job. Watch the gear timing when reassembling.

THANKS-you 2 guys tell it like it is. I was hoping you would tell me it is a simple repair.---Tee

I have rebuilt several steering boxes by now and it is not hard at all, just takes time and some hassle with the tin. . All the bearings and seals are available. New steering columns and ball races too if needed. I love driving them after rebuilt. Its like night and day.
