Clutch Tips/Tricks

I am in the process of swapping motors on my 860 and put in a new two stage clutch while I have it split. Spent a few hours today trying to get the motor/clutch mated back to the trans. I don't have anyone available to help and I have the motor hanging from the loader on my other tractor because I don't have a concrete floor to work on. I also have the steering column off, so I'm able to see inside trans. I was able to get it close enough to start the long bolts in the top two holes and align the two large bolts on the side. Just can't seem to get the pilot bearing/splines aligned. Wondering if anyone has any tips/tricks to make it easier, or is it just a matter of trial and error?

Put the pto in gear and rotate the shaft at the rear of the tractor to help aline the pto splines.
Put the trans in gear and turn the engine to help aline those splines.
Once the splines are alined and the engine is within 1/2" of being completely mated up wiggle the engine un oil it mates into the pilot bearing.
Don't try to draw them together with the bolts.

did you align the plates up first before you tighten down the pressure plate to the flywheel with a guide???

If not, it will probably not line up.. .If you did, then as others have said... it really takes another person to turn the pto shaft, then wiggle the engine to get the two shafts to line up with the disc's and pilot bearing. can be very tedious or not pending the mood of the moon.

If the splines on both clutch plates aren't lined up you probably won't get it to go together. If the spines are lined up measure the distance from the back of the block to the face of the bell housing from top to bottom, and side to side (they all should measure the same) to make sure its not going together crooked. If you have the measurements, let's say the top measures 2", and the bottom measures 2 1/4" you will need to raise the engine, and transmission up so it measures the same distance. If you have a measurement of 2" on the left side, and a measurement of 2 1/4" on the right hand side you need to move the engine, and transmission over to the left until it measures the same. If you have 2" on the top, bottom, and sides the two halves then it is going together straight.

Took a few more hours this morning and a lot of walking back and forth from the front to rear of tractor, but I was able to get it back in. A concrete floor and extra set of hands would have been nice. Next step is to pull the power steering off my 4000 parts tractor and bolt it to the 860.

Glad you got it back together.
I finished rolling a Ford 5030 back together last night after replacing the clutch.
I do have a concrete floor and transmission jack that makes the job much easier.
