Hello Guys. This is my first post and last fall I bought a old Ford 640. This is the first tractor I have ever bought and the first one I have drove sense I was a kid back in the 60's. Any how I went out today to start the tractor to move it and it rolled over real slow. I know some of these old tractor has a Positive ground and was pretty leary of hooking up a battery charger. So I open the hood to see if I could see which side was positive was and which side was negative but I could see no markings on the battery but I know it is the original 6V system.

What I did was hook up a 0-10V DC volt meter with a positive and negative side to find out which way they had it wired. They have the positive side wired to the starter and the negative side to ground.

My question is, Is this the correct wiring or has someone wired it backwards??

Thank you in advance.

Not factory, BUT unless you know what you are doing, you ought to leave it as is if it has been working that way or it may not work in the future.

Thats what I thought. It has been working fine for the year I have owned it, Even the lights work. I was just concerned on hooking up a battery charger to it. I will leave it as is until the mag takes a dump and then I will probable switch it over to 12V. Thanks for the reply's guys. Its much appreciated.

I recently got a 1960 841 and had the same thing . They put a new battery in to sell it and hooked it up wrong so it killed the votltage regulator.
The battery died Not to long after i got it home .So I had it all a part to fix all the oil leaks and bought a new regulator ,polarized the generator
and switched the cables back to positive ground. So far so good everything working as intended. Not quite every thing still leaking out of my
power sterring pump at the pully seal. Waiting for a new one .

that battery, if built in the last, oh 20 years WILL have embossed markings to show polarity on it. You MAY have to take cables
loose, but they will be there.

As the others said. if it has been charging and starting.. leave it hooked up like it has been hooked up.
