pto repair on a 3600

I recently acquired a pretty nice diesel 3600 at a local auction. However, the pto will not engage with the engine running--just grinds the gear. If I shut it off, then it can be engaged, and it turns the baler ok. What can try to fix it short of splitting the tractor?

twin stick 8 speed?

IS your clutch freeplay correct?

If yes to both, then either the pto stage of the clutch is stuck, and more commonly, the clutch is worn past it's mechanical capability to clutch the pto.

I had a 3600.
The pto clutch started slipping. So I adjusted the linkage so it would hold. But I had to shut the tractor off to engage it.
It failed soon after that - would no longer cut much of anything with the brush mower.
I had to replace it.
