Power steering filter

I have a '63 4000. Today I started to clean up the power steering pump. It has been sitting in a container open, and up side down draining.

I went to clean it, and surprise, there is no filter in, and nothing to hold the filter in. Is this something I can just make up, or is there something special to the bolt that holds it in.

Plus a small steel disc was in the bottom of the drain container. What is it from, it came from inside the reservoir?

Thanks, Pat

That disc hold the filter against the little cup in the bottom. You essentially won the lottery as that is usually missing. You can McGyver a
retaining spring that reaches through that disc and hooks to anything you can find, or fix a thin bolt to something that then will poke through that
disk and take a wing nut.

You should be able to get a new latch spring. Its just a wire hook with a spring to hold the little cap in the center
of the filter.

nashranch,
Great thanks, A picture is worth a 1000 words!
Now I'll make one up, and know what I'm doing.

Thanks all, Pat

on at least one of mine there was a hole in the bolt and anohter a hole in the metal pan that the filter seast in. I dont know if these were original or farmerized.

I didn't see a hole in it anywhere. I painted it yesterday, so tomorrow I'll flip it back over and take a look. If there's not, I'll drill one in the metal pan as William had.

I'll make it up. once I get a filter.

Thanks, Pat

What????? No holes or drilling needed. This filter spring hook is in the inside of the reservoir and only holds the filter in place. It does not attach to the cover pan if that's what he's talking about.

yeah, sounds odd the way i said it. the little hook on the end of the retaining spring needs something to hang on to and I have seen a few differnt little holes for th hook to hook inot on the little pad the filter sits on.

(quoted from post at 11:58:22 11/29/17) I think that it's supposed to hook onto a lip on the inside of the big nut at the bottom of the reservoir.

Yep that's the only way it will hold that filter down securely. Especially if ya make it 4" like I pictured above

Here are some pics. I posted earlier this year to help someone out.
Maybe help you out too.

The hook goes in the hole, it will catch on a lip about 1/2 " down
the hole. The filter I have is 3" dia. 1 3/8" thick with a 1" hole.
If you make one be sure you have plenty of tension on the spring.
