Ford 640 updraft carb questions no fuel at plugs

Hi, I have a 57 Ford 640 134 ci engine..no fuel at the plugs..
Carb is new and assuming I have good compression does anyone know why I would have no fuel at the plugs?

Tractor ran fine just this month but no I have a no start situation.
Carb is getting tons of fuel.. it leaks out the intake exit at the carb if I leave the choke on too long while spinning it over.

so plenty of fuel at the carb but nothing at the cylinders/plugs
plugs are dry as a turkey bone that's been sitting around for a week.

How does this updraft system function?
Could a bad intake manifold gasket cause fuel from being distributed to the cylinders/plugs?

Going to the manual to read up on this stuff but it does have me stumped a bit at the moment.

Anyone ever had this issue before and found a solution?

Thanks in advance.

you need about 2 to 8 % gasoline and all the rest air & it needs to be atomized, so IF you did have wet plugs it wouldn't start. Just because they are not wet does not mean that a burnable mixture is not present.

Pat, you are over thinking this, but not to worry you have plenty of company. This question is asked every week this time of year. When you crank a motor with an updraft carb, and it does not start in a few rotations, when you release the starter button, all of the gas that was in the air in the manifold is......... coming right back down, and will run out of the carb. Perfectly normal. If it is NOT running out you have a problem. Just keep cranking with the choke pulled out until it fires, then open the choke. If it does not start CHOKE IT SOME MORE. It takes a richer mixture when the air is cold.

first, thanks for the reply.

That's interesting..
My thought were that if I had no spark I'd have wet plugs..
I have or at least 'had' spark last time I checked so pulled the plugs thinking they'd be wet after attempting to
start it with no luck.

When I saw dry as a bone plugs I figured well if I'm getting spark, got compression and fuel is pouring out of the
carb.. it should start, but nope. Just turns over and over.

Guess I'll start with the basics tomorrow..

Check compression with tester
Check again for spark
Pull plug on carb to see if gas pours out

This engine turns over very slow. Starter has probably never been apart.. so charging the battery overnight to make
sure it's up to parr in the am then I'll do the testing and see what happens.

Showcrop.. Makes sense about the fuel running back down after motor stops turning over.

I hope you're right on my thinking too.

This tractor was running like a dream just a week ago.
I'm charging up the battery overnight then will check for spark in the am just to make sure it's still there then give
it another shot.

I had a problem with mine that if I let up on the starter button it would then fire-up. It wouldnt fire as long as I had that button down.

I chaged the battery up overnight..
Tried starting with full choke.. nothing.
Put had over carb intake and she wanted to run.
So I tapped the carb with the back of my screwdriver and she started right up. Must have been a stuck float.

Thanks for the feedback from everyone.
Now I can get some things done with this baby.. :)

Congratulations! So it appears that when it looked like it was flooding it actually was not getting gas. Please post back on how it does as yours it more.

A trick I often used on my 8n and Jubilee was to heat the manifold up with a propane torch. It helps the fuel atomize in the warm air better.

Yes, all it was I believe is the float was stuck.
Tapped on the carb and bingo away she went.

Thanks for all the feedback!

ou do this as a cold weather starting aid? How long do you use the torch?
