I indirectly asked this in another thread, but would like to ask again, more specifically.
I have a 1964 4000 utility tractor used for normal duty, and I have a spare 192 industrial engine that was in a tow behind trash pump.
Both engines have a slight knock, and I'm not sure where it is coming from on either one. Aside from the knock they both run well. The 172 has a cracked head that was welded about 20 years ago. I believe it overheated when mowing and the radiator got clogged with dandelion seeds.
The main question is, for my '64 4000, can I put a 192 head on the 172 block when I refresh the motor?
Assuming the 172 knock can be fixed with a normal refresh/rebuild, I would like to put a head back on it that is not already cracked - even though it has been "fixed" with welding.
Will the 192 head fit without any issues, and will there be any performance differences, positive or negative when using a 192 head on the 172 motor? I would expect to refresh the head as well, but would not be planning on a lot of porting and extra grinding unless I'm told it is necessary.
Depending on what is wrong with each motor, I may end up using the entire 192 engine in the tractor which will make this a moot point. But my first preference is probably to keep the original motor but change the cracked head.
Any opinions? Thank you.
Frank
