1970 Ford 3000 gas.

I have had the 3000 for about 6 weeks now
and put about 20 hours on it. I removed the
spark plugs to check. 1 and 2 looked fine.
Number 3 had a small amount of white crud
on it (Crud for a lack of better term). I
put a camera scope into number 3 cylinder
and see a small amount of white crud on top
of the piston. It is on just one side of
the top of the piston. I would say about 1
inch by 2 1/2 patch of it. Water leak into
the cylinder? Bad head gasket? Could it be
a bad intake manifold gasket? Thank you for
your advice in advance!

Was it running bad?
Was the plug fouled out causing the engine to miss?
Loosing water?
Using oil?

If it was running ok it's most likely a bad valve seal or loose valve guide allowing oil to leak in around the intake valve.
If it's running ok not using large amounts of oil or doesn't have a lot of blue smoke coming out the exhaust pipe I'd keep using it.
Don't look for problems on a 47 year old tractor, they'll show up soon enough on their own.

John

Your not going to get oil in the cylinders from the intake gasket on these engines, so if it's using oil, fouling plugs or producing a lot of blue smoke you'll have to pull the head to have it repaired, and depending on the condition of pistons, rings and cylinder wear you could be looking at a complete overhaul.

As I said before, if your where just doing a general curiosity check and the tractor runs fine, keeping using it, it could be years before it becomes a real issue.

Thank you Destroked 450.

It does not use a lot of oil, water level has stayed the same and no large amount of smoke. The plugs were not fouled except #3 had
a little white crud. I think it might miss a little. I am changing it over to electronic ignition this weekend. Also replacing
plugs, plug wires, rotor cap, and distributor cap this weekend.

I was wondering if WATER could be leaking into the cylinder from the intake manifold not oil. This is a water filled intake
manifold correct?
