I have a 1957 621 Utility tractor with a loader and a back hoe. I would like to add a three point hitch to the tractor. Does anyone know the procedure to retrofit the tractor with the PTO and lift?

Every time that this has come up over the last fifteen years the advise given is to get another tractor to remove the rear axle and transmission parts from. Or better yet just get another tractor. You need a lot more than you think you do.

Good advice. If your time is money as it is with most people these days, then for the cost and aggravation of adding a PTO and lift to your tractor, you could probably buy another tractor that already has the PTO and lift, and then you wouldn't need to remove the backhoe every time you want to switch tasks. Or if you no longer need a backhoe, sell the one you have and use the money to buy one that has the PTO and lift (and loader if you still need that).

I was pretty sure all you had to do was install the parts. You need the pump, manifold, and lift cover. Oh yeah, the pressure relief valve in the bottom of the rear axle. I couldnt say if your tranny has the hydraulic tubes installed also. you would have to take off the weep hole cover on the bottom of the tranny to feel for the tubes. I dont know if you have a PTO shifter or just a plate there but you would need that and the PTO shaft. There you go back to "you might need more than you think". The hardest part if you buy another tractor is swapping the loader and backhoe. Then again it could be about the same amount of work. You might be better off getting the heavy duty tractor. I would think a backhoe is a little hard on the 600 series rear axle but I dont know how heavy your backhoe is. Decisions, decisions! I must decide! I have a set of heavy duty wheel hubs for a backhoe that came on my tractor. First set I've ever seen, they have a larger nut seat with larger nuts.
