New Ford 9600 ProjectThanks

Just got a Ford 9600 that was bought new by
my wife's family. The engine was overhauled
800 hours ago after the block started
leaking due to cavitation. Tractor has
5,000 total hours on it now. I plan to
restore/fix it you (doesn't need much) and
is exciting knowing the entire history of a
tractor for once.

Questions:

The injection pump is leaking and needs
rebuilt. Who is the authority on the
minimec pumps and what should I expect to
pay? First quote by phone was $2000

Any good parts yards? Has a year around can
on it now, want to remove it and get a ROPS
with canopy. Also need battery box covers
and steps that were removed when the cab
was put on.

Thanks

Pump repair cost depends on what parts are worn that need replaced. I've not had a six cylinder Simms go over nine hundred yet that I've gone completely through.

Just because the pump is leaking doesn't mean it needs to be rebuilt. It could be as simple as tightening a delivery valve holder that came loose. Can you give more specifics?

I?ll have to get specifics on where the leak is and let you know. It will leak a five gallon pail sitting overnight. It also surges bad so I figured something is wrong with the governer

If it leaks that much overnight, the location of the leak should be quite easy to find. As for the governor surge, have you ever changed oil in the cambox? If not, try that, and if it doesn't cure the problem, you likely have some bearings going out. I can repair it for you if you'd like to ship it.

if you are new to these. it takes oil in the pump like bern said. and do not put brake fluid in the brake resivoir, it brake oil not the same thing. pull the inspection cover off the pump at the rack it can get very dirty in there and cause it to stick

As Bern was implying the oil in the cam box on the injector pump may need to be looked at. Just because the engine was serviced at regular intervals does not mean the pump was also serviced. The oil in the pump could become diluted with fuel or get low over time. That could be the source of the engine surge. The owners of some tractors never knew that the pump needed serviced also. Most who did know serviced the pump at the same time as the engine was serviced. Very simple job although a manual would be very helpful. Use same oil that is run in the engine.

What Old Ford Mechanic said.

Bought an 8600 , guy never knew about changing the oil in the pump.

Think I lucked out, it was diluted with diesel when I changed it, but ran it this summer baling hay. Changed it again before I started my second cutting, looked good.

It might be a bad lift pump if it's leaking out the overflow tube.

Our 8700 has 11900 hours on it and the injector pump has never been touched. Oil changed in pump at oil change. Just luck I guess. Tomorrow it probably won't start.
