Ford 4000 Diesel SOS Transmission

New to the forum.
I have a late 60's Ford 4000 diesel with a SOS transmission.
Bought it used, been a great machine. Recently the transmission appears to be out of sync.

When park is selected, it is actually in 2nd or 3rd gear. I cant get to neutral or reverse.

Hoping this is a known issue with an easy fix.

Ive been advised to get the manuals, any ready sources for those?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, ideas or suggestions.

Sounds like something slipped in the shift cable mechanism.
As you where talk in the other section, don't mess with it until you have a good service manual for it.

Likely Your shift cable has slipped. It's either loose in the shifter or at the trunnion in the transmission.

It could also have come apart at the joint but is still holding somehow. this would be very unlikely.

The trunnion wheel could also have slipped in the end camshaft on the control valve.

You can buy the manuals [b:3196b654f0]here[/b:3196b654f0] on YT. Be sure you're close on the year.
62-64 were 4 cylinder engines, 65-75 were three cylinder engines.
Model and serial number are stamped on the flat just aft of the starter.
Those will tell you the year, assuming the trans hasn't been changed.
The three cylinders would have had the same info on a silver tag
under the lift up half of the hood. Welcome to the forum.

Do a Google search for ford_tractor_2000-7000. Look for dadzoolife. It should be near the top of the list. I have had no problems with this site.

Even with the OEM Ford service manual, I needed to pay close attention to my work the first time replacing the cover of the SOS. The instructions for replacing the PTO cable took a few minutes to digest.

Most dealers have (rather thin) manuals on a rack that cover most tractors, used to sell for about $30. Those manuals, I&T or something
like that, have a large section on SOS transmissions. I had one in an old 4 cyl 4000 and the manual guided me through problems I had with
band adjusting and PTO cable adjustment.....never saw an SOS before.

Thanks everyone. Still a rookie and a part time tractor driver.
I ordered the manuals and once they get here I will take a good look before I dive in.

I am somewhat hopeful that something has slipped in the shift housing but while hopeful, I wont presume.

Ill be back once I get in to it. I really do want to save this old girl.

Thanks again for helping a rookie.
