3 cylinder 4000 gas - fuel pump delete

The engine I bought a couple weeks ago was ran as gravity fed.
My Case 930 gas was also ran that way. Obviously different tractors.
My uncle's 2000 3 cylinder gas has been ran that way for years.
His opinion is "If it runs that way, why mess with a fuel pump?"
What are your opinions on running a 3 cylinder without the fuel
pump? Any experiences where this does not work well?

My 4000 was just gravity flow when I got it.
The po just used it to feed a few bales of
hay on the 3 point and never worked it hard.
When I got it I tried hooking it up to the
brush mower and made it work some.
At full power it acted like it wasn't
getting enough fuel.
So temporarily I hooked up an electric fuel
pump and it made a noticeable difference.
It is still running on the electric pump but
I have all the parts to put it back to
original - one of these days.
If you don't have the parts an electric pump
is not a bad option. But I would say a pump
is required if you plan to work the tractor
hard.

I have used several 2000 and 3000 with the fuel pump bypassed without a problem as long as I had a half tank or more gas in the tank. They will usually run with less gas but to get full power I suggest keeping the tank fuller than 1/2 full. The 4000 is a bigger engine with more power, burning more gas so if it does not give satisfactory service by keeping plenty of fuel in the tank, then add the fuel pump, either electric or the original type. If you put on an electric pump use one that only pumps 3-4 psi. The float valve will only hold that low pressure without leaking and flooding. Electric fuel pumps are made with many different output pressures so check specifications to get the correct pump for your application.

Also there were problems on hills with gravity fed tractors and could also have heat related vapor lock or gas boiling problems. Boiling point is reduced dramatically by raising pressure.

If you do gravity feed , beware that any aftermarket fuel filters can also cause fuel delivery problems.

However many many tractors run well on gravity feed.
