Ford 335 / 3600 Power steering : Follow-up

Great advice by Charlie N to remove the alternator bracket. Sotxbill and Shaun Wallace contributed as well.

I ordered a new filter and all associated gaskets. Because my unit has a loader I also found it useful to remove the engine oil filter to gain better access. Part of the loader frame runs near the side of the power steering pump. Loader frame makes it a bit snug but it is manageable. I decided to replace the power steering filter and change the oil in hopes this would give more information and help diagnose additional problems if they exist. I cracked both lines and drained the oil. When I pulled the canister there was a small remanent of the original filter that had broken away and was inside the canister. I pieced it all together to make sure I had all the filter material. the oil was very clean and I believe the filter material just gave way, lucky that I caught it before it became worse..... I cleaned everything well, lubed the new canister o-ring, installed the new filter. I installed the new washer seal on the center bolt, inserted through the canister, slid the new filter over the bolt and then installed the canister back over the pump making sure i had the new filter seated. The canister slid over the seal with a small persuasive bump and then I hand tightened the center bolt. I connected the two lines, checked the alignment of everything, snugged everything up and then filled with recommended oil. Reinstalled the alternator bracket and alternator. Then I drained the motor oil, installed new motor oil filter and added motor oil. I was not planning to change the motor oil but removing the engine oil filter made easier access around the front end loader frame.

Started the tractor, used the front end loader to lift the front wheels. Then I rotated the steering wheel slowly to turn the front wheels from full stop to the other full stop. I repeated this very slowly four times. the goal was to purge air from the power steering system. I turned the tractor off and added a bit more fluid to the power steering tank per Ford shop manual specs. It did not take much fluid to top off. I started the tractor and repeated the slow rotation from full stop left to full stop right. No leaks and power steering is working just fine.
