Just a quick post, I know how you guys like pictures...1955 960....was sitting with a bunch of leylands on a lot. Watched it sit for over a year and when the snow was on her last Saturday..I knew she needed a new home.
What do you guys think of her?

I've always liked those old rowcrops. Tin looks pretty straight, correct grill and fenders... Glad you gave her a new home.

I don't think that there is much of anything nicer looking than a 960, and that one looks original, unless it is a 961.

Please keep the starter the original red like it is.

Showcrop, you do the work on that baby? If so sir, you certainly have bragging rights. Gorgeous......takes LOVE to do what you did to that
tractor.

Interesting about the starter being red. Was the gen red also off the assembly line? Not knowing, I always thought restorers that painted
both red were just cutting corners since most all you see are black....but that must be that aftermarkets are black and most we see these
days are aftermarket.

We know that the starter had to be red from the factory, because if it was added after coming from the paint room, unless a worker were assigned to carefully clean the starter mating surface, there would be no grounding of the starter, and the tractor would not start. We know that all starters need to be removed and repaired every 10-20 years depending on use. We know that the auto electric shops scratch the paint up so they repaint them. We also know that they all refuse to research and stock all correct colors of tractor paint, so they get the same paint as car and truck starters, black. One of mine has a black starter right now because I needed to use the tractor immediately and I haven't yet gotten to painting it red. Another bit of evidence is that when you remove a starter from a tractor that has never had the engine painted, if you look at the paint behind it you will see that it is noticeably thinner than the rest of the motor, and probably a little rusty. Another bit of evidence is a an advertising brochure that I have from early in XX1 production. It is about Fords on home construction sites before industrials were built. The pictures are not colorized black and white like the ads just prior to it, these are actual color photos, and it shows the colors of most parts as they were sold. If you would like to know the original color of any component just give a shout and I will pull the brochure out and look for you.

(quoted from post at 08:01:02 11/05/17) Which paint did you use on the 961?

I used Dupont's Nason urethane 2K. It is low-end automotive grade, so it is a great compromise between high priced and machinery grade.

Greyrider,
Not sure yet, she's pretty original, except someone took off the power steering and it's got a different drag link. She looks pretty good as she is, would look nice next to the 841 all painted up, but I kind of like her as she is. Bought it for using with a sickle mower, maybe half tracks in the winter. Never seen a narrow front with tracks on. My neighbor had one but a wide front that I worked on and kind of liked it, and have kept my eyes open for one and this one popped up. A friend of mine had it for sale on his lot, and it sat there for a year and I finally asked his bottom dollar (cash) and we went from there. She's getting a few upgrades, and a physical this week, and a new used rest o ride seat. Never seen one this wore out,(farmers wife must have been on the heavy side) but luckily I have a few in nicer shape, seats that is.

An 841 can look good in work clothes too...she'll take some of the work away from the 841. The 841 doesn't turn all that sharp, and even though its cool to work, live power and the sharper turning will work better planting and cutting hay. Maybe a parade or two....
