What is this part called?

And how can it leak from the base?

I also need to know if anyone has a Pto shaft cover for the same tractor, I ordered one from this co. but it did not fit and they say they do not have the right one for this tractor, someone told me to contact Roberts used tractor parts, and I did, but did not hear back from him on the second inquiry. The first time I failed to tell him that the part screwed in.

It is the reservoir for the thermostart
A device in the intake manifold to aid in
cold weather starting. They did away with
that device in 1976 and just used a tee.
I likely have a correct pto cover here.
My email should be open.
Who's the young lady in the photo ?

1.Ok I hate to act like a complete idiot but the man working on the tractor thought this part was leaking diesel, but if it has to do with the the thermostat then it cannot be leaking diesel, right?
2. If it is a reservoir that sounds like it means it houses the thermostat, is that correct?
3. If a tee replaces it, what size tee is needed and what material is it made of?
4. I sent the pto shaft cover back recently to you, it was my understanding that you did not have one that is 1 1/2 " and screws in. Would you please check and see if you do?
5. The shipping is killing me.
6. The very frustrated young lady is me!!

Thanks for your help.

Thermo START not stat.
Yes it has to do with fuel. Nothing to do
with coolant.
I don't know where you're located - north
or south? but if you are in the south he
could just eliminate that device
completely. If in the north a block heater
works much better than the thermoSTART for
cold weather starting anyway.

Ok I am south in Ky, so we will do away with this part.

Have you looked to see if you have the 1 1/2 " Pto shaft cover. that fits a 3cyl 1969 diesel Ford 4000, that screws in? Not the one listed in the parts section, because you should have it back by now as that one does not fit?

I'm not sure what you mean about sending
the wrong one back to me.
I'm just a private party - like you - and
did not sell or send you one before. But I
may have the correct cover you want. It is
up at my land.
We are going up to go deer hunting
tomorrow and I could look for it this
weekend. You would have to email me to

Thermostat fuel reservoir, most times when it looks like their leaking it's the hose that connects to the bottom fitting but I have seen a couple leak where their crimped together.
I've got 5 tractors with thermostart and it only works on one, but I seldom ever use it.
Tell the guy working on it to run a hose from the injector return up to the tank fitting and do away with the reservoir, but don't throw it away, someone restoring a tractor may want it

Edit: Hi Sliverwings, I'm the guy north of you in Breckinridge County, sorry to heard about you 8N losing a pto shaft, I hardly ever look at 8N post since I don't have one.
Going to get a little nosey but who you got working on your 4000, is he the same guy that started on it, a tractor mechanic or a neighbor helping out?
A little busy myself right now but feel free to ask questions and keep posting photo's.
Is he tearing it down or putting it back together?

What are you wanting the pto cover for, the 8N or 4000 and why. I've got the cover for my 801 and had one for a 4000 but haven't seen it in years.

That might be fine in Arizona, but if I live in cold country and have a wore out 5000 parked where there's no power, I want that thing working.

Or even if it's parked where there IS power. It's nice to be able to start them without having to remember to go plug them in an hour before you need them.
But when it gets truly cold... plug them in!

I could not find an email on this page, but I am interested in the pto shaft cover if it is 1 1/2 " diameter and screws in. Hope you brought it back from the farm?

Yes, it turned out it was the hose. The cover is for the 4000, and without it the hole is wide open, except for some kind of temp cover, that is no where near permanent.

The guy that is working on it now, is the one who first started with it, however, a neighbor was able to get the 4000 running, it mowed a strip down the field, then the first guy, forgot to close off the drain to the radiator, allowing it to leak out all the fluid, causing the tractor to overheat, we do not yet know how much if any damage was done.
