Funny, when I was running Ford trucks you just bought them by the case for the trucks and the tractors....FL-1As and WW carried them
along with their Fram PH 8A.

Amen to that. Junk!!!. Have a personal story to verify that. Found a plastic plug in the oil galley against the rear main bearing. Turned out to be the bypass valve from the Fram filter. Motorcraft uses a metal valve.

I found that "plastic bypass valve" blocking the center main oil galley, ruined the crank, and block. The trust bearings were part of the center main bearing, it was a mess.

That's terrible news. (about
fram). So I guess I should start
looking for new tractors, because
I have ruined mine?!? Fram are
fine.

You think Fram is so good take a look at a Fram filter and the same filter in a Wix and see the difference. The Wix filter has more filtering media than a Fram filter and the top cap of Fram filter is cardboard and Wix is metal. NAPA Gold Filters are made by Wix.

I have had good luck using Napa gold filters in my old tractor,
Use Baldwin oil filters in my dodge diesel truck,

Both brands have worked well for me, I use shell rotella 15w40 oil

Asking a guy which oil and filter is best is like asking a bunch of guys who has the best looking girl friend,

You will get a different answer from each one,

I think the most important thing, no matter the oil or filter you use, is to change them on a regular schedule,

You need to see all the different filters cut away and see what inside of them and how well built. Some of the filters are so cheaply made that the filtering media can tare letting dirty oil pass through. The better filters have more filtering media than others. There are good filters out there but a bunch of them are a waste of your money.

Same argument could be made for the girlfriends. ;)

Yeah but grab hold of the two caps and see which one comes off......the tin one, and not just on wix but on all that had metal caps. While you are there investigating, check out the bypass valve construction............ Your picture may be deceiving in that fewer corrugations isn't necessarily worse if they are twice as long. They are rated against a standard and the GPM rating (full flow) limits the density of the filtration material aka 19-21 micron area.

I have pictures of a Fram (lowest grade like your picture...PH8A, orange case) I had in my 2000D for over 2 years just to see what Fram actually looked like after that kind of use in an old diesel. I was impressed. On the paper ends and the seal, I have pictures of where I had to rip the material apart in an attempt to pull the adhesive loose and it held fast. If I remembered which one of my photo chips carries them I'd post them.......and just might if I run out of something to do. Was very educational for me.

All the bad mouthing they get is just hot air! While I was at it I dissected a Wix, Wix XL, Delco, NAPA, Parts Plus and a couple others I can't remember used in a multitude of engines I have around the place.....(I have a 55 gallon barrel where I dump my used filters). Fram held it's own and if you move up in Fram quality things really get competitive if not superior.

So, with that, I now run the premium grade of Frams in my equipment as first choice along with full Syn. oil in all but the old Fords.

I worked for a commercial carrier that thought they would save a bunch of money going to Fram filters and after loosing 3 DT466's to oil filter failure they went back to fleetguard. I had a Fram oil filter on my buick that that I had no oil pressure idling and replaced with Wix filter and pressure went back to normal.I had one of their extended air cleaner filters with foam around it and it sucked foam into the pleats of filter and dealer replaced it and new one did the same thing in less than 3,000 miles. That Fram PH 8A has only 193 square inches of element surface area and the Wix 51515 has 349 square inches of element surface area and both are the same micron rating.

thats only important to me if I dont do regular oil /filter changes.. As the filter will only filter out the larger particles by design. If you want better filtering, you must run a bypass filter and not rely on the main filter. Or you can move to a triple filter design if you wish with some of the upscale extended change filters.

to each, their own.

I run ph8a's by the case. no worries... if changed on regular basis, more pleats are not needed.

I would be more concerned about the running the minimum hd oil quality, as it will have more to do than the filter.

One of the most important thing with any oil is keeping it clean. Clean oil gives you long engine life.
