The original subject was "Running Cane Mill with the 841S".

I've often wondered how using a post hole digger would work on a mill. Have you had any problems? Do you have any close up pictures of the attachment? Thanks.

It works well. The biggest problem is that the tractor tends to turn the mill too fast. The slower RPMs you can get, the better the mill runs, and the less wear-and-tear on the mill you have.

I don't have any pictures of the set up, and I'm at work right now, but it amounts to, in our case:

-a square hollow shaft whose diameter is just a shade bigger than the diameter of the auger mounting shaft
-a hole all the way through the square shaft to accept a mounting pin or, in our case, bolt, to attach the auger mounting shaft
-the square shaft is about a foot long or a bit less
-the square shaft is welded to a plate that bolts onto the old "pole assembly" on the mill. The old wooden pole has been cut off flush with the new plate.

One issue that I see is that you could inadvertently make the whole assembly too tall, and the tractor 3-point couldn't lift the digger up high enough.

My late grandfather made this modification when my dad was a kid. Dad seems to recall that this caused the cane mill to run in reverse, so they had to adjust the rollers accordingly, and switch out the "input" and "output" sides.
