Hydraulic splitter valve problem

Following on from an earlier thread I still can't get it to work.

I've connected the valve up (Gresen 550) directly to the loader pump and outlet. It is getting pressure. With the valve lever in the centre position, there is no flow from the outlets, as expected. With no hoses screwed into the outlets, putting the valve up sends a spurt out of the top outlet (my workshop floor is a sight...) and vice versa with the lower outlet. However, the two outlets are connected together by a port:

This means that fluid flows out of both outlets and so goes to both sides of the ram which means it's not ever going to work (I know the ram is functional from when I Jerry rigged it before). Can't think why a valve would be designed like this
 
Further research indicates that it's a loader valve so never going to work. I've ordered one of these:
