I have a 1957 ford 800 tractor that the cut off valve under the gas tank leaks fuel.it makes no difference if you tighten or loosen the screw it still drips. Can you use sealant on the screw to fix this problem? or does the unit need replaced?

Some, including original equipment have a packing that can be tightened and/or replaced. If the stem between handle and valve body has a nut, tighten 1/8th turn to see if leak stop's. If leak slow's but continue's,repeat 1/8th turn but be carful not to overtighten and crack the nut. If leak presist's,turn valve off, unscrew nut, wrap packing string (available at plumbing and auto supplys)around stem then tighten nut.

It needs replaced. The last two times I replaced one. I had to
get two to get one that didn't leak.

If you shop on Amazon they are cheaper.

The screw-type shutoff is typically repairable. Drain the tank and remove the valve. You'll see what looks like a rivet on the bottom of the valve, that's the stake that prevents the screw from coming out. It's a bit tricky to pull the stake; you need to get something sharp under the head. Once you've pulled the stake, you can remove the screw. You'll see it uses a couple of o-rings, which can be replaced with hardware store parts.

Just to add to what MarkB said, you can tap the hole the pin was in for a screw so that you can replace the o-ring again if needed. The metal is soft so you must be careful. The O-rings should be of Viton as they resist gas. When you remove the valve which will be a little challenging due to close quarters, there will be an o-ring between the valve and the tank, its a good idea to replace this one too. Aftermarket valves seem to have a bad reputation for leaking soon after installation and the are expensive.

YES! That is actually the one that was leaking on my tractor. The aftermarket valve was only a few years old, yet the o-rings for the screw and tank were both bad. (Now that I think about it, the screw has only a single o-ring.)

Good info my 841 not leaking but i need a new fuel line . I have read a lot of past posts still wondering make my own or buy a new one all
made. Also best way to run my home made one?
