Ford 861 Starter Button Issue

Okay guys I am back again. My mechanic replaced my starter button and wired up my 6V solenoid up correctly. At first things were fine and it started up properly. However after installing a new air cleaner tube something weird occurred. When I go to start the tractor it cranks over WHEN I TURN THE KEY!!!! It's almost like the starter button has either malfunctioned or been bypassed somehow completely!! What in heck is going on!?!? Can I continue to use the tractor in this state?

Unhook the battery. The solenoid is right behind the air cleaner tube. Your mechanic needs to recheck what he did. Obviously, he didn't get things in order.

Your started button provides ground to the solenoid to start it.
Sounds like you have somehow pinched or grounded that wire.
No, you can't keep running it that way without causing damage.

Yes it was working fine until I had to disconnect the cable to the starter to install my new air cleaner tube.

Sounds like you unhooked a wire then put it back on in the wrong place or you some how have shorted out the wire going to the starter button. Either way DO not even try to run it as is or you will be replacing the starter and maybe the battery and even the wiring

Could the starter button have been defective? Because after my tube install it work fine for two presses then the rest was history.

It could. But more likely you pinched the wire from it to the solenoid and it took it a bit to wear through and short out.
