3600 steering

I just brought home a 3600 diesel from a local farm auction. Really like it except it has two issues. First, the steering wants to veer to the right if you are not holding the wheel. I have heard that the power steering in some of these Fords are problematic. Please advise on what I may be dealing with here.

The other issue is the pto will not engage with engine running, it just grinds. Apparently the pto clutch is not disengaging. Is this a common problem on these older tractors, and what do I try before splitting it and replacing the clutches?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Ray,if it pulls to one side, i would check your toe in on the front tires, sounds like they are way out. I have a 1979 3600. At 7000 hrs i had the motor overhauled, but didnt do much with the leaky steering system (was only minor then) Now at 8000 hrs its leaking from the steering column badly. I will have to due a total overhaul of the steering column this winter. When the motor was over hauled, i remember my mechanic friend adjusting the pto clutch and it worked good for a while then started grinding when it was being engaged. i didnt want to split the tractor again so i live and deal with it.So now if i need to engage the pto (say bushhoggin), I pull out my red stop engine button, and just as its going to stop turning, i engage the pto lever, then push the red button back in, takes practice but i can get it engaged and have the motor fire back up, you still get a minor grind but i can live with. Just something you can try .....john

Toe in will not make it pull to one direction, it will wander if toed out, and will scrub tires if either.

Yeah, every 40 years or so you have to go through the ps column and replace seals and stuff.
I'm sure it's in the htdraulic block in the column. I would go through it. Replace the upper and lower seals. Clean out any crud or rust you may find in there. Check your springs that one isn't broken and all plungers move freely.
Not a bad job. Worst of it is pulling the tin off and getting the steering wheel off.
Those are outstanding small tractors and you will like it.

SWAG....
Bottom bearing is wearing allowing the column to drop a bit,, therefore putting it in a right turn???

Or nut not staked and it backed off a bit,,, no longer keeping the lower column centered?

piece of dirt in valves, not letting the right turn port seal correctly?
