Steering column removal - Ford 600

Our Ford 600 is in half right now as we prep to paint it....I have a question about the steering column and sheet metal that make up the dash panel. Can I remove that whole "piece" by the 4 bolts that hold this to the transmission housing? It looks like if I remove those four bolts and the "small wheel" (part of throttle?) on the front of the trans housing that this whole unit can come off.

What color should that be painted? It the large cast piece that is part of the steering system and the steering wheel is on top....mine is like a dark gray right now.

thanks, moday

A 600 series would have the cast steering gear part red and the tin parts that surround and on top gray. 601's- all would be red.

I should have added a picture. Does all this steering column just unbolt with the four bolts into the trans and the throttle wheel removed? I think it's the wrong color.

The steering box should be red to match the cast iron of the tractor. The tin dash should match the hood. Remove the connecting link between the throttle friction disc and the throttle rod and remove the two 5/16 bolts holding the throttle rod support.

Provided all wires, steering tie rods, throttle, etc. are disconnected, then yes, the whole thing can removed from the transmission by removing those four bolts.

As others have eluded, though, if you're going for authentic OEM colors, the dash tin needs to be removed from the steering gear/column for painting.

Not sure if I know what is the throttle rod support but I think it will come off as one big unit. Do I have to pull the steering wheel if I want to get to the cast steering column? Is that difficult? Thanks in advance

Steering column is not cast. If you want to paint the steering column/gearbox, the steering wheel needs to come off. A good jaw type puller will pull it.

Perhaps this observation needs to be made. If you're doing nothing more than painting the tractor, the whole steering assembly can stay on the transmission. Just remove the wheel and the dash tin. Prep, prime and paint away.

Some steering wheels are a bear to remove. A heat gun will help. I have taken a sheet metal disc to one cutting sideways and dive a chisel in to break. A torch will talk to it. Some still need a big hammer driving up, above the center of the tranny.

"Do I have to pull the steering wheel"

If you want to take the tin off, yes.

"Is that difficult?"

Sometime very difficult. I've had a couple I had to cut off.
Especially the plastic covered ones on later tractors

Most of the time, I just use a standard 3 jaw gear puller
with the jaws removed. Heat from a torch helps too.
The second picture shows that in place, after the steering
wheel cam loose. I leave the nut on, but loosened, to protect
the threads and help protect the steering column.
