Ford 3000 C1013C live 540 PTO Clutch issues

I have a 1971 Ford Tractor and I've been experiencing issues with the PTO engagement for some time. The clutch doesn't appear to allow the PTO to engage while the tractor is running. I have to engage the PTO while the engine is off in order for it to turn. I can disengage the PTO fine while running. The issue appears to have gotten worse....may not be related, but I feel that it is. Yesterday I was bush hogging and ran over a rotten stump. Now, the clutch pedal has a ton of play in it and will allow me to change gears, but it only engages after about three or four inches being depressed. Before that, the clutch worked fine, but it did frequently grind while changing gears. I haven't tried adjusting the linkage yet. I need some expert advice on what could have caused the clutch to have so much play. I know it's a live 540 PTO, so that means I have a two stage clutch.

Really need some advice please....FIRST TIME POST!

While I do not know that tractor as such the clutch adjustment would be the first place I would go to figure out if it has other problems also. A clutch adjustment should be made once In a while due to normal wear of clutch parts any how

It was out of adjustment internally was why had to kill to get in gear. The new problem sounds like the classical wadded up clutch lining. This is going to require a engine/trans slpit. And while in there pull flywheel and and adapter plate and replace core hole plug.

I would suspect you bent the clutch rod, under the left step and now have very little travel in the pedal. check the long rod and linkage first. could even have damaged the arm sticking out of the side of the transmission,, in front of the left step.

then I would suspect it pushed hard enough to break off some of the clutch fingers on the pressure plate next, if the external linkage is fine. Could have bent or broken the throw out bearing arm also...

I appreciate your detailed response. While I will have to split the tractor, I'm on a tight schedule getting the farm ready for a fam reunion next week. The clutch pedal linkage was a little bent, so I disassembled it, straightened it out and took it in as far as it would go. Now, the clutch engages much higher with about an inch play. The PTO, as you explained, will have to be addressed at a later time. Thanks for your recommendations.

Just read my NEW Manual last night ( Ford 3000) and it definitely says you MUST stop the engine to engage the PTO...

You better reread that manual again or get a good one, if you have to shut the engine off to engage the pto their's a problem with the clutch.
