I have a 1971 Ford Tractor and I've been experiencing issues with the PTO engagement for some time. The clutch doesn't appear to allow the PTO to engage while the tractor is running. I have to engage the PTO while the engine is off in order for it to turn. I can disengage the PTO fine while running. The issue appears to have gotten worse....may not be related, but I feel that it is. Yesterday I was bush hogging and ran over a rotten stump. Now, the clutch pedal has a ton of play in it and will allow me to change gears, but it only engages after about three or four inches being depressed. Before that, the clutch worked fine, but it did frequently grind while changing gears. I haven't tried adjusting the linkage yet. I need some expert advice on what could have caused the clutch to have so much play. I know it's a live 540 PTO, so that means I have a two stage clutch.
