Ford 600 stiffner plate

How much effort goes into the stiffner plate when painting/restoring a tractor?

We have our Ford 600 apart...the stiffner plate (between engine and trans...that's what I call it) is kind of dirty and greasy. Do I clean that and paint it red or is the outside rim usually red and the rest of it is just unpainted metal? I can see how over the years, if can become messy with even the smallest amount of dust and oil (engine seal or trans seal on either side...hopefully not leaking). Easy to clean, but just curious what most people do...

thanks, moday

Hi Moday

I call it an adapter plate as it allows the engine and bell housing to connect together and everything to align. I would clean it up and leave it unpainted then when you have the engine, bell housing, transmision and rear axel back together shoot the exposed areas with some colour then.

I clean them up good, then hold them up to see which parts show. Generally pretty much just one side shows, and I paint that side and the edges. It is much easier to work on just one side.
