A friend called this afternoon. He was using his 850 and the PTO just stopped. It
will not run. Don't know any more then that. Don't have a book here. Just looking
for suggestions.

Not good but not complicated. Ask him if he can pull or push on the shaft and does it move in or out.

(quoted from post at 18:36:10 10/01/17) He says no.

The next step then is to remove the round cover on the left side where the PTO lever is. You will see behind it how the lever moves a collar back and forth on two shafts to connect them. He may see a problem here though it is more likely the clutch. Post back.

It's not the clutch if his propulsion system is still working. An 850 uses the same clutch for transmission as for PTO.

With the side cover removed see if the shifter rail will engage and disengage. The nut at the end shifter rail may have come loose and not allow the fork to fully engage.
Sometimes people over fill the system so remove the bottom bolt on the round side cover first to see if fluid comes out. If no fluid comes out you can remover the side cover without having a mess all over the floor.

Since he has the cover off tell him to get a long screwdriver or similar and move the shifter rod forward to see if it will engage. This could be done with the engine off and checked at the rear by turning PTO shaft.
