Brake spring questions

Headed out to Agri supply today ,best price around on box blade rippers, and sway bars. Gonna pick up odds and ends too. Got to thinking if they have a brake spring I should get one. But old one still on tractor. Any idea how long that spring is? Also will any stiff spring that length work? All it does is pull brakes back in. Does it have to have the "bare" spot in middle or will a solid spring work?

I think it's like that to fit in there with the other parts. Complete brake job on these are not high cost, relatively easy (your axle seals being done already). Always worth doing around here because of the hills. I have a 640 needing axle seals and likely brake work, it won't be used for work until those brakes are 100%

I think this spring is hidden behind the shoes on the left and spans both shoes, not sure if you could use a fully wound spring in there due to space.

Looks like we are lucky , part in your picture is nice and square , doesn't look worn. Hope new springs will help the pedal stay up.

Gonna go get me a set tomorrow afternoon. Thanks. Our O'Rileys was clueless! Blank stare is all I got there. Off to Advance Auto Parts.

These are usually not too difficult to get working correctly. The part that wears, that I noted in the photo, easily built up and squared off it was worn. Build it up too much and you won't get the drum back on. That will keep the pedal where it needs to be once the adjusters are set. New springs should add to that. Some say the drum type brakes on these were marginal, in good working order, they perform well on these hills. This one was done in '04 and probably saw 50-75 hours per year until mid '15, still work great and I have adjusted slightly one time since. I did crack an aftermarket drum once, so the OEM drums went on again. One side had dropped off the edge of an old field, had to work the brakes to get it out, probably the only time I really had to use the brakes other than to stop.

We have 3 fords. All of em have good left brakes. Not so good on right. Seems odd? Will post this evening and report on new springs

Grandpa love- "Not so good on right. Seems odd?".

You stomp on the right brake to bring the right front wheel back down in the furrow while plowing. Tractors seem to drift left while plowing.
