3400 Clutch Replacement Question

I have an older 3400 diesel that I've split for a clutch replacement. The flywheel has been resurfaced and I have a new pressure plate and clutch disc. The original pressure plate was sitting on spacers/shims.
Are the shims a required part of the installation or optional if needed to adjust finger/release lever height?
The IT Manual leads me to believe the finger height is set during pressure plate rebuild/assembly.

Should I verify finger height after installing the new clutch with shims and remove them if needed, or install them and just verify the pressure plate releases the disc when I assemble the halves?

TIA

Shims need to go back in; pressure plate is adjusted during manufacture/rebuild assuming they are installed at installation.

How do you propose to measure finger height once it is installed?

If it was required I would put a straight edge across the release lever and measure the height above the flywheel.

Your thought is to install them and just verify the pressure plate releases the disc when I assemble the halves?

I should have worded my last question a little differently. Since you plan to measure finger height after it's installed, do you have some sort of a spec to go by? I'm not aware of any spec for that, at least not in a Ford manual. All lever height specs assume the pressure plate is in a factory jig.

Generally, once the pressure plate is bolted down, you want approximately an equal gap between the top of the release lever and the bottom of the cover, and between the bottom of the lever and the top of the disc. I usually use my thumb as a rough gauge.
