Looking at a 601 tomorrow

Going tomorrow to check this 601 out. The ad says it runs, lift works, pto works. Tires look good in the picture. All the metal looks real good. He is asking $1200 for it. I feel I have to at least go look at it for that price. What do you all think?

If it runs and drives as it should than it's definitely worth the
money. 5 speed, might be a 661 model with live PTO. If you snooze
on this one you will loose cause it will sell fast.

You'd have to at least double that to get a running 601 around here. Unless there's something majorly wrong with it, I'd buy it, if
it was close to me.

Even here, I'd be surprised if it were still there "tomorrow".
Hopefully you were able to get it.

Bought it. It was everything the ad said it was. Starts right up. No smoke. PTO shifts in and out smooth. Lift works great. Tranny shifts great. Tires in good shape. No fuel leaks. Some oil leak but very minor. No big dents but a little rust. Not bad at all. Brakes work good. And to top it off, he is going to deliver it to my house. He only lives a couple of miles from me. He has a much better trailer than I do. Very nice and respectful young man. I am going to slip him an extra $100 for his troubles. I told him he was selling it too cheap. He told me it just didn't handle his large round bales of hay like he wants, so he bought a larger tractor. I feel like I fell into a mud puddle like a kid playing in the rain. Happy.

He delivered it about 4:30 this afternoon. The numbers on the tractor say it is a 1960 651. Drove around some, adjusted the carb a little. Greased all the fittings. The only things I can find wrong with it is the alternator is not charging and the steering is a little tight. Got dark on me so I had to quit playing, uhh I mean working on the tractor. I am very happy with it and feel like I got a heck of a good deal on it.

Even though it's not a 661, it's still a good deal. I would
suggest a full set of manuals for it to help you better understand
your new tractor

Congrats, consider yourself fortunate. That is a great tractor. Tight steering only means you won't fall asleep driving it. That's a good thing. The alternator may work once you play er (I mean)work on it. Even if it is shot the Delco alts are cheap. I prefer the three wire over the one wire self exciting but that's just my take. Good Luck!

Yes, I have a few Delco alternators laying around here in some of my "stuff". I like to save "stuff" cause you never know when you might need it. I have owned Chevy and GMC trucks for most of my life. The steering is loosening up a little after hitting things with the grease gun. Going to check the lube in the steering box this afternoon. I think the front spindles are where things are tight. Going to jack it up off the ground when I check the box as I have a wheel bearing that is a little sloppy. Overall though, things seem to be in pretty good shape. The front wheels are fairly new. It holds good oil pressure and the temp gauge works. Gas gauge doesn't, but I plan to put a voltmeter in that hole anyway.
