Ford 2000 3cyl running rich?

My SIL, who is a car motor guy (chev 350's mostly) says that the tractor is running too rich. On these cars/engines you can adjust the high speed and low speed metering on the carbs to dial them in if they are running lean or rich.

The tractor runs just fine, starts good, powers up under load and does the work. Holly carb. Does seem to drink the gas a bit. Looks like there is no way to adjust anything but idle, right?

Is it possible for it to run rich? How can I tell and if so what can I do about it. I have heard that the Zenith carbs are better running but tend to use more gas. Is that correct?

I'd hate to throw $400 at it for an new carb to fix something that is not broken. Need advice.

Check that the choke cable is adjusted such that the choke fully opens and fully closes.

Of course, he will also want to check the air cleaner element.

And float sticking and or set too high...

Why do you think the tractor is running rich?

Is it smoking, lots of black smoke? or the plugs fouling out? flooding and running rough??

or is it just using lots of fuel?? Yes, gas tractors use lots of fuel.

remember the main jet is set for correct mixture at max load,,, and jetted accordingly. If jetted leaner, it would overheat at load.

Never trust a Chevy guy to diagnose a Ford! ;)

Yes it's possible for it to run too rich.
Easy to see from the plugs and black smoke from the exhaust.
As the others have said, usually caused by lack of service on the
air cleaner or the choke cable being mis-adjusted to make up for
a poor performing carb. I would look at those first.
If the choke is mis-adjusted, expect it to run poorly once "fixed".
