Ford 4000 tractor serial number information

I have recently acquired a 3 cylinder Ford 4000 tractor
and I cannot interpret the manufacturers data.

Can someone have a got at it.

The serial number on the right side is as follows:

D10140 The last number may be a C.

3E2

* B924741 *

The only think I think I have determined is that it was made in Braseldon, England. I have conflicting information that says it was made in Michigan.

The model number is definitely D1014C, not D10140. The last character is a letter that designates which transmission it has, and the letter O was never used for a transmission designation on the 1965-1974 thousand series.

D10 - 4000 general purpose AAD chassis tractor
Second 1 - diesel engine
4 - independent 540 rpm PTO
C - 8 speed transmission (4 forward speeds and 1 reverse ont he main shifter and high/low ranges on the secondary shifter for a total of 8 forward and two reverse gears)

* B924741 * is the serial number and the B at the beginning means that it was assembled at the plant in Basildon in the UK. There's not a lot of documentation available on the European serial numbers as to the starting numbers for the various years, but I do have one document that lists the starting serial numbers for them as of 4/1/68, which is when they changed the sheet metal from the louvered hoods and wraparound grill to the smooth sided hoods and inset grill. The Basildon plant actually maintained two different serial number ranges, one for the "Domestic" market and one for the "Export" market. I'm not sure if "Domestic" meant just within the UK, or for all of Europe, but the Domestic serial numbers started at B810xxx starting on 4/1/68, and the Export serial numbers started at B085xxx on the same date, so yours was made for the Domestic market and it was made after 4/1/68. I assume that it originally had the headlights inset into the grill and the "transmission hand brake" as well as the brake lights and turn signal lights that the European tractors had due to regulations over there that the US made tractors of the same time period did not have.

3E2 - This looks like part of the Unit Number (also referred to as production code or date code by some folks). It should mean that it was made in May 1973. If what you found is the entire number then it was made on May 2, 1973, but if there are extra characters after that you didn't find yet then it was made sometime between May 20 and May 29 1973. There could be one more digit after the 3E2, and there should be another letter at the end, either an A, B or C.

Look on the underside of the right side hood panel, above the battery to see if the foil sticker is still there. If it is there and still legible then you might find the rest of the Unit Number on the sticker.

Hate that you can't edit your posts here.

There was a typo in my first response. The following line:

D10 - 4000 general purpose AAD chassis tractor

Should actually read:

D10 - 4000 general purpose Ag chassis tractor
